Here’s a clip from the 1940s showing so-called “donkey baseball” in Mexico City. This is baseball where donkeys are used to transport players between one base and the next, which contrasts with traditional baseball where players get from one base to the next by simply running.

Clip begins with baseball players riding their donkeys in single file on a baseball field, as if putting on a show for onlookers. The crowd looks on from nearby bleachers, clapping with approval.

There’s a wide shot of the stadium, which is mostly empty except for a few hundred people, who are sitting near the field.

One player at bat hits the ball and jumps on a waiting donkey to get himself to first base. With some reluctance, the donkey moves the man along to his desired destination.

Another player has to whack his donkey with a stick to get it to move. Yet another player manages to get his donkey to take him through run all three bases and get to the home plate, which scores him and his team a run.

Several players fall off their donkeys, flopping onto the field.

The final scene shows players arguing with the umpire.
