The therapist Carl Rogers conducts an interview with "Mr. Lynn," his patient, about Lynn's homosexual tendencies. Lynn explains that he fears new things. He removes a cigarette from a pack in his breast pocket and searches for a match, but is unable to find one. While the therapist is looking for a match, Lynn hums and whistles uncomfortably. He lights the cigarette and tells Rogers that he wishes a therapist could solve his homosexuality "problem" for him, and that he's been stuck on it for over a year. Rogers parrots Lynn's thoughts back to him in the form of questions.
