Here's a 1930s clip offering "snapshots" of London -- all narrated in the style of a newsreel.
Narrator explains “Armistice Day” over a wide shot of an incredibly crowded street. The king deposits a wreath on a monument, commemorating those who gave their lives to their country and king during the war.
We see both male and female police officers, also known as "bobbies," on city streets, going about their work. We see a street cleaner, also known as a “duster,” gathering his brooms. He looks sharp wearing his felt hat, which is turned up on one side.
We see a “Costermonger,” i.e. a traditional London street trader, placing buttons on two young men. The narrator points out that a Costermonger is, in some way, associated with the term “pearlies.”
Next are shots of the Thames River, the Houses of Parliament, the famous clock-tower Big Ben, and Westminster Abbey. A line of judges walk out from a courthouse wearing robes and wigs.
Birds and sailboats populate the Thames. Street artists draw on sidewalks. The final scenes offers wide shots of the glorious St. Paul’s Cathedral.
