In this clip, from a silent film telling the story of the Puritans, pilgrims and Indians party and trade in Merrymount, a neighboring settlement to Charlestown, lead by Thomas Morton. The leaders in Charlestown want the goings on in Merrymount to stop, so they resolve to gather a militia to attack the other town.Clip opens on some people in Merrymount running about, looking drunk and dancing with Indians. Thomas Morton is shown in particular and named in a title card. Some trading goes on between these pilgrims and Indians. Morton comes between a deal and discusses it with them. An Indian examines a gun. A man begins to climb a maypole in LS as people below continue in their revelry. A title card takes us back to Merrytown. Governor Winthrop tells Captain Underhill, a commander, to capture Morton. In a hut, the family from before is present. The man operates a large mortar and pestle while the boy sits at his side. The mother is reclining, looking forlorn and sick. The husband gets up from his work and gives her water from a bedside pitcher.
