Here's a 1964 commercial for the New York Times, which is often referred to as the news of record in the US.

A man buys a newspaper at a newsstand. The man opens and reads the newspaper, and a balloon in the shape of a glob pops out behind his back. Another man looks at the balloon and man and smiles.

The first man starts to cross the streets while reading, and the balloon follows him wherever he goes. Curious people look on. The man enters a square where there’s a horse.

The man enters a building, and the balloon continues to follow him even to the elevator.

In the office, the man puts down the newspaper on his desk. The balloon eventually lies down on the newspaper. The narrator says: "You’ve got the world on a string when you’ve got the New York times”.
