In this clip from 1992 -- part 2 of 2 -- Democratic US presidential candidate Bill Clinton, with his wife Hillary Clinton, holds one of his campaign rallies in Illinois, speaking to crowds of supporters from a stage.
The clip begins with Hillary telling the audience that she and Bill believe passionately in America and can no longer stand by and watch what is happening to the country. This message garners much applause from the audience.
In the back of the stage is a velvet blue curtain. On the curtain hangs a cutout of the United States that displays the words, “Bill Clinton FOR PRESIDENT.” Five American flags are on the stage along with palm trees and a person conveying Bill’s and Hillary’s speeches in American Sign Language.
Hillary then asks the audience to help the Clinton’s deliver their message -- i.e. what Bill Clinton’s campaign stands for -- to voters in Illinois and Michigan. The hope is that this message will get Bill elected to the presidency and into the White House, which Hillary believes will bring much needed change to the country.
Bill and Hillary hug each other, and Bill steps up to the podium and mic to deliver his speech. Bill believes that the nation is hurting and wanting change, and that the nation wants to get away from the politics of the ‘80s, a politics of division.
Bill tells the audience that the true measure of character in politics is not perfection, but genuine commitment, which continues day in and day out, through our successes and our failures. This measure of character in politics, Bill continues, is rooted in the desire to always be doing better, which Americans can do and are, moreover, morally bound to do.
