“Crime Wave” Warner Bros. Original B/W.  Directed by André De Toth; starring Phyllis Kirk; Sterling Hayden; Gene Nelson.  1954.  Film Noir.  Paroled convict tries to start a new life but is watched closely by tough detective. When former cellmates from prison break out and seek shelter from him, he is forced to comply. Eventually they try to force him to join them in a bank robbery.

“Phantom of the Rue Morgue.” Warner Bros.  Original in Warnercolor.  Directed by Roy Del Ruth; starring Karl Malden and Claude Dauphin.  Edgar Allen Poe adaptation.  1954.  In France in the 1870s, a string of strange murders happen in the Rue Morgue. The authorities are baffled, but they do have one man who may have the answers, Prof. Dupin.  When Dupin is approached by the police to help, he agrees. Soon a set of suspects are found, including a sailor named Jacques and a professor named Marais, who is involved in unauthorized (and bizarre) animal experiments.

“The Egyptian.”  20th Century Fox.  Original DeLuxe color, CinemaScope.  Directed by Michael Curtiz; produced by Darryl F. Zamuck; starring Edmund Purdom, Victor Mature, Jean Simmons, Peter Ustinov and Michael Wilding; cinmatographer Leon Shamroy.  1954.   Set in ancient Egypt this slow-moving epic focuses on the life and rise to power of the court physician to the Pharoah. Edmund Purdom was a last-minute replacement for Marlon Brando who was originally cast as the Egyptian of the title.  REPEATED AFTER “DADDY LONG LEGS.”

“The Magnificent Matador.” 20th Century Fox.  Original Eastmancolor.  Directed and written by Budd Boetticher; starring Maureen O'Hara, Anthony Quinn, Manuel Rojas.  1955.  Karen Harrison is a spoiled, rich, American predator who falls head-over-heels for the brooding, tormented, about-to-retire matador, Luis Santos who has inexplicably run away prior to a corrida that was to occasion the "alternativa" of a young, up-and-coming bullfighter. The mystery is solved 94 minutes later, after Maureen has conquered Tony and Tony has saved Marueen's life by caping a toro bravo with his plaid horse blanket.
“Violent Saturday.”  20th Century Fox.  Original color DeLuxe,  CinemaScope.  Directed by Richard Fleischer; starring Victor Mature, Lee Marvin, Richard Egan and Stephen McNally; Sylvia Sidney and Ernest Borgnine in supporting roles.  1955.  The best-laid plans of three thieves go wildly awry, and their perfect crime turns into a desperate afternoon in the normally sleepy town of Bradenville.

“The Left Hand Of God.”  20th Century Fox.  Original in DeLuxe color, CinemaScope.  Directed by Edward Dmytryk; produced by Buddy Adler; screenplay by Alfred Hayes based on William Edmund Barnett’s novel; starring Humphrey Bogart, Gene Tierney, Lee J. Cobb, Agnes Moorehead, E.G. Marshall.  1955.  Carmody is an American flier who turned adventurer in 1947 China. To escape a savage warlord, he masquerades as a man of God, even performing priestly duties. While on a mission, he falls in love with a beautiful nurse who, though ashamed of her feelings, is drawn to him. When the warlord catches up to him, Carmody must take the most desperate gamble of his life.

“Love Is A Many-Splendored Thing.”  29th Century Fox.  Original color Deluxe.  Starring William Holden and Jennifer Jones.  1955.  Newsman Mark Elliott is an American war correspondent temporarily staying in Hong Kong during the Korean War. While there he meets and pursues a beautiful Eurasian doctor. But when they begin to fall in love, their friends and families pressure them to stop the cross cultural relationship.

“How To Be Very, Very Popular.”  20th Century Fox.  Original color DeLuxe and CinemaScope.  Written, produced, and directed by Nunnally Johnson; starring Betty Grable and Sheree North.  1955.  Stormy Tornado and Curly Flagg are two showgirls from a San Francisco cabaret who witness the murder of one of their fellow performers and can identify the killer. Not wanting to get mixed up in a murder rap, the girls flee the scene and hide out at Bristol College, disguising themselves as boys. However the need for attention makes the girls want to stand out in their stage costumes and then the trouble begins.

“The Seven-Year Itch.”  20th Century Fox.  Original in DeLuxe color.  Starring Marilyn Monroe, Tom Ewell.  1955.  Has the iconic air conditioner/white dress shot.

“That Lady.”  20th Century Fox.  Directed by Terence Young; starring Olivia de Havilland, Gilbert Roland and Paul Scofield.  1955.  The unpopular king Philip II of Spain asks princess Ana de Mendoza to save his teetering throne.

“Daddy Long Legs.”  20th Century Fox.  Original in DeLuxe color, CinemaScope.  Directed by Jean Negulesco; starring Fred Astaire, Leslie Caron, Terry Moore, Fred Clark, and Thelma Ritter, with music and lyrics by Johnny Mercer. The screenplay was written by Phoebe Ephron and Henry Ephron, loosely based on the 1912 novel Daddy-Long-Legs by Jean Webster.  1955.  A playboy traveling through Europe anonymously sponsers a lovely young girl whom he sends to college in America. Complications arise when they meet two years later and fall in love.

“There’s No Business Like Show Business.”  20th Century Fox.  Original in DeLuxe color, CinemaScope.  1954.  Directed by Walter Lang; written by Lamar Trotti (story) and Phoebe Ephron and Henry Ephron; starring Ethel Merman, Donald O'Connor, Marilyn Monroe, Dan Dailey, Mitzi Gaynor, and Johnnie Ray.  1954.  Molly and Terry Donahue, plus their three children, are the Five Donahues. Son Tim meets hat-check girl Vicky and the family acts begins to fall apart.  PARTIAL REPEAT AFTER THE BROKEN LANCE.  

“Woman’s World.”  20th Century Fox.  Original in technicolor, CinemaScope.  Starring Clifton Webb, Cornel Wilden, June Allyson, Lauren Bacall, Fred MacMurray, Can Heflin, Arlene Dahl.  1954.  A drama film about corporate America. When the president of a car company needs a new general manager, he invites his three top executives and their wives to New York. Since he knows all the men are capable, he makes his choice based on which one has the perfect wife for the job.

“Outcast Of The Islands.”  London Film Productions.  Original in B/W.  Based on book by Joseph Conrad; directed by Carol Reed; starring Robert Morley, Trevor Howard, Ralph Richardson, and Wendy Hiller.  1951.  An unprincipled English swindler's passion for a native girl leads him to betray his friends.

“Broken Lance.”  20th Century Fox.  Original in DeLuxe color and CinemaScope.  Directed by Edward Dmytryk; produced by Sol C. Siegel; stars Spencer Tracy, Katy Jurado, Richard Widmark, Robert Wagner, Jean Peters, Eduard Franz, Hugh O'Brian and Earl Holliman.  1954.  A self-made cattle baron rules his empire and his family with an iron hand. His sons turn against him and destroy him and his legacy.

“The Racers.”  20th Century Fox.  DeLuxe color.  Directed by Henry Hathaway; starring Kirk Douglass and Bella Darvi.  1955.  A talented driver is determined to make it to the top of the European racing circuit. Through daredevil risk and plain luck he does. But his recklessness has jeopardized his friendships and may cost him the woman he loves.

“Untamed.”  20th Century Fox.  Original in color, CinemaScope.  Directed by Henry King, edited by Barbara McLean; starring Tyrone Power, Susan Hayward, Richard Egan, Agnes Moorehead, Rita Moreno and Hope Emerson.  1955.  The on-again, off-again romance between a Boer leader and an Irishwoman, which begins in Ireland, then in South Africa, with many complications, against a background of the Boer struggle for a free state and Zulu wars.

“White Feather.” 20th Century Fox.  Original in technicolor and CinemaScope.  Directed by Robert D Webb; starring Robert Wagner.  1955.  In an effort to peacefully coexist with white settlers, a Cheyenne tribe agrees to resettle, sacrificing valued Wyoming hunting grounds to make way for gold prospecting. Led by Colonel Lindsay, the tribe's resettlement journey is also guided by a rugged land surveyor, Josh Tanner and his Cheyenne tribesmen friends-- Little DOG and American Horse. But an attraction between Little DOG's fiancée and Tanner threatens to ruin the resettlement plans, and the tribe sends an arrow with a single white feather-- a symbol of their intention to wage war.
