Here’s a clip, likely from fall 1989 to spring 1990, of a press conference outside the US Capitol building in Washington DC where an Asian-American advocacy group pushed to get Japanese-Americans compensated for being wrongly interned during World War II. This is clip 1 of 3.
In attendance are:
- Miya Iwataki, a member of the National Coalition for Redress and Reparations;
- Congressman Robert Matsui;
- Congressman Norman Mineta; and
- Fred Korematsu, and others.
A blown-up letter to President George Bush lays on the ground before the group. In the letter, the group urges Bush to appropriate funds for the fiscal year for reparations to Japanese-Americans.
Decorative, brightly-colored origami "leis" is on display next to the group that's speaking to the press. The origamis are, perhaps, a kind of offering to, or recognition of, the Japanese-Americans who were wrongly interned or those who have since passed.
Attendees wear circular, yellow buttons that read, "Justice Delayed is Justice Denied."
