Here's a silent clip from the 1950s showing the 15th Annual Bonneville Nationals, a speed-racing event, taking place at the Bonneville Salt Flats, which is near Salt Lake City, Utah.

The clip begins with a shot of a covered booth, likely for the event’s officials. The side of the booth says “BONNEVILLE NATIONALS.”

We see silhouettes of people in the booth, watching a car that's in the distance and speeding screen-right. The car is travelling across a vast, desert-like terrain.

A dark-colored race car, with the number “222” displayed on its side, is being prepared by a team of mechanics. People stand near the car, talking to each other and admiring the car.

Two mechanics push a mini race car about 20 feet across the desert-like terrain as if to give the car a boost or headstart. One of the men appears to be holding a gas tank or fire extinguisher in his right hand.

A man looks through the viewfinder of his camera, which is on a tripod. The cameraman has his head and camera covered by a white cloth -- perhaps to protect himself and the camera from the heat and sun and to better see the camera's images. He slowly swivels the camera clockwise.

A wide, long shot shows another race car speeding screen-right.

An older man puts on a helmet, securing its straps beneath his chin, before entering his race car.

A man wearing a Panama hat gestures to a driver to move forward, pointing into the distance. The man with the Panama hat also wears a dress shirt that reads “Bonneville Nationals Inc” on the back side.

At a start line, we see a white race car take off, slowly but surely speeding up. People stand by and watch while some people take photos or shoot footage of the moving race car.

We see a panel of gauges, presumably of the white race car. We then see the white race car speeding screen-right across the flats.

Another man wearing a Panama hat shoots footage using a camera that’s secured to a tripod; he pans the film camera clockwise while holding a striped umbrella.

We see yet another shot of the white car speeding screen-right.

We see several people watching the race from the covered booth referenced earlier. One man who is wearing sunglasses covers his eyes as he peers into the distance.

In the clip's final scene, a mechanic opens the door to the white race car, which is now parked. The mechanic shakes the older driver’s hand several times, both before the driver exits the car and after. Both men appear joyful, as if recognizing that both have achieved a certain amount of success on this race day.
