In this clip, from a silent film telling the story of the Puritans, a messenger arrives to tell Winthrop’s settlement that force will be used on them by Governor Ferdinando Gorges. The pilgrims stand strong. The clip opens on Winthrop talking to someone. An ultimatum has arrived, and the man carrying it walks into the meeting house. He delivers orders from Governor Ferdinando Gorges. Winthrop states that he does not recognize that man’s authority in MS, and the messenger informs him that force will be used, but Winthrop seems unperturbed. Out the window, men in a troop stand at attention with guns, showing that Winthrop’s men are ready. The messenger leaves, and the pilgrims walk about.
