On October 6, 1967 The Diggers staged a "Death of the Hippie" ceremonial march down Haight street with a coffin filled with hippie paraphernalia and flowers signifying the death of the media generated hippie, and his rebirth as a Free Man in a Free city with Free necessities provided to all. A banner reads “The brotherhood Freemen is born.” Hippie sings a folk song while people hold lit candles and make raised peace signs. They sing happy birthday to something it sounds like they are saying “Attica.” They lift a broom wearing glasses and decorated with tiny American flags in the air. The hippies continue carrying the coffin and large wooden cross. A ring of people run around a fire. Hippies chanting “They’re not gonna put it out” as cops arrive to the scene.
